The world number one men’s doubles pair Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo managed to become the first Indonesian representatives to advance to the semifinals of the All England 2022 badminton tournament.
They face the fifth seed from India, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty in the match which took place at Utlita Arena, Birmingham, England, Friday (18/3) night. The Minions, nicknamed Marcus/Kevin, managed to win two straight games 24-22 and 21-17.
This is the 12th time for The Minions to win over the Indian pair, with previously the Indonesian men’s doubles also successfully overthrowing Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty at last year’s Indonesia Open 21-16 and 21-18.
Advancing to the semifinals, Marcus/Kevin are now closer to their third All England title, having previously won it in 2017 and 2018.

Looking back, in 2017 The Minions won the All England title after overthrowing the Chinese pair Li Junhui/Liu Yuchen with a score of 21-19, 21-14. Meanwhile, in 2018, The Minions won the title after defeating representatives from Denmark, Mathias Boe/Carsten Mogensen 21-18 and 21-17.
Even though they are getting closer to their third All England title, the Minoins’ journey in the semifinals is not easy, because they have to face the winner between the Japanese third seed Takuro Hoki/Yugo Kobayashi or their compatriot Muhammad Shohibul Fikri/Bagas Maulana.
If they meet the Japanese couple Hoki/Kobayashi it will be the 14th time they have met. Although based on the head to head record, Marcus/Kevin are superior with a win-lose position of 11-2, but Hoki/Kobayashi managed to win two wins in their three meetings last year.
Meanwhile, if they meet Fikri/Bagas, it will be their second meeting after previously in their last meeting at the Denmark Open 2021, The Minions lost in the rubber games 21-17, 17-21 and 21-23. (OL-4)
