APPEARING as debutants at the All England badminton championship, Indonesian men’s doubles pair Muhammad Shohibul Fikri/Bagas Maulana managed to surprise by successfully reaching their first final in the world’s oldest badminton championship.
Struggling hard in the semifinals against the world number one pair Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo, the Young Indonesian pair managed to win the rubber game with the final scores 22-20, 13-21 and 21-16.
Talking about their victory in that match, Fikri/Bagas admitted that they did not expect to reach the final round, they also admitted that it was like a dream for this achievement.
« Of course we feel happy, feel happy and didn’t expect to be in the final, but we don’t want to be too happy just yet because the task has not been completed, there is still a final tomorrow, » said Bagas after the match in an official statement from PBSI, Saturday (19/3) night WIB.
« I still feel like a dream. If this is a dream I don’t want to wake up. We had difficult days last year, this year we want to rise. Hopefully this will be a good start for us, » continued Fikri
Facing The Minions, nicknamed Marcus/Kevin, Fikri/Bagas admitted that it was not an easy match. Having been left behind in the second game, the unyielding hard work given by Fikri/Bagas managed to lead them to victory.
« Thank God we were able to finish the match smoothly and were given a win. Today we played quite well, went all out and gave our all to the maximum, » said Fikri after the match.
« In the first game we were able to control the game, not allowing Koh Sinyo and Mas Kevin to develop. We continued to attack even though we were chasing the points. In the second game we lost focus and the points were far away, in the third game we tried to get up and focus again to find attacks, « explained Fikri.

« I think they played very well today and we made a lot of mistakes. Congratulations to them, » said Marcus.
« We really hope to meet Fikri/Bagas (in the semifinals) because Indonesia will have a representative in the final. It’s not an easy thing against our compatriots because they know much better what our game is like, they also seem to play nothing to lose while we play under pressure , » added Kevin.
Previously, the mixed doubles coach of PBSI Pelatnas Herry Iman Pierngadi appreciated the achievements of the young Indonesian couple at the All England 2022. Apart from Fikri/Bagas who successfully reached the Finals, another young couple believes that Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin also made good results by reaching the quarter-finals.
« It’s a good start for them. The first time they joined the All England to get to that point, it was a pretty good achievement, » said Herry.
But Herry said that the young couple still had a long way to go, they still needed a lot of proof. Therefore, he warned his foster children to consistently maintain their best performance.
« However, there is still a long way to go, they still need further proof. They are young players, it is still possible to go up and down, » said Herry. (OL-7)
