The drama occurred during the round of 32 match of the All England 2022 badminton tournament between Marcus Fernaldi Gideon/Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Lucas Corvee/Ronan Labar (France) took place. Where the four Utilita Arena Birmingham where they competed had a leak.
This happened during the second game with a score of 2-2, in the first game The Minions -Marcus/Kevin’s nickname – already pocketed a 21-12 advantage.
No doubt, their match was delayed for some time before the committee moved it to field three. After restarting, the game becomes crowded. Several times Marcus/Kevin had to catch up before finally closing the second game with 21-18.
“Actually, we played pretty well since the beginning of the match, but it was not good after moving the field because the long wait became a bit cold,” said Marcus after the match, quoted in the official PBSI statement, Thursday (17/3).
“After moving the field in the second game the points were tight and we were always behind, lucky in the final points we were able to regain control and catch up,” continued Kevin.
Marcus/Kevin, who were seeded first, had to meet Choi Sol Gyu/Seo Seung Jae in the round of 32 but the South Korean pair decided to withdraw.
Having an opponent who has a lower level on paper than the pair Choi Sol Gyu/Seo Seung Jae, The Minions admitted that they did not feel at an advantage because for him all opponents in All England had equal strength and were good players.
“We don’t feel benefited from the withdrawal of the Korean pair. All opponents are the same, all are tough because this is All England,” said Marcus.
Meanwhile, in the other men’s doubles match, Bagas Maulana/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri and Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin also advanced to the round of 16. After both of them were compact to get rid of their compatriots.
Bagas/Fikri won over Pramudya Kusumawardana/Yeremia Erich Yoche Yacob Rambitan, 21-18, 21-19. And Leo/Daniel beat Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto 21-16, 22-20.
“Today we focus on one point at a time, don’t want to think about winning or losing,” said Leo.
“We also play more attacking, because if we play defend it will be difficult to get points because Fajar / Rian have good rotations. Very fast. In terms of the game, it’s the same as previous meetings,” explained Leo.
Meanwhile, Fajar / Rian admitted that their start was not so good in the two early 2022 tournaments. After stopping in the last 16 of the German Open last week, they are now lifting their suitcases in the last 32 of the All England 2022.
“Indeed, in the first two matches, our results were not good,” said Rian.
“What has to be evaluated is that we still make a lot of mistakes ourselves, we have to focus more especially on the final points and when we are ahead. In the first and second games we have won but have not been able to finish the match with a win. There are many lessons to be learned, we must can quickly rise from this unfavorable result,” said Rian. (Rif/PBSI)
