SUPPLIER of tires for the MotoGP event, Michelin stated that it would provide ‘special tires’ for drivers in the Indonesian MotoGP which will take place at the Mandalika Circuit, Central Lombok, NTB, Sunday (20/3). This was done based on the results of the pre-season test at the Mandalikan Circuit, last February.
Michelin Motorsport Two-Wheel Manager Piero Taramasso explained that the tire compound supplied was actually the same. But the tires are paired with a ‘special shroud’.
“The results of the pre-season test at Mandalika were very positive from a tire perspective, but we soon realized that due to the combination of the new track surface, fast circuit character and high temperature, the tires were under pressure and too hot,” said Taramasso.
“As a result, we have modified the allocation for the weekend races. We will keep the same compound which during the tests provided an excellent level of grip and consistency, but we have placed it in a special casing designed to control the temperature more effectively,” he added.
With this solution, Taramasso feels confident that the tire performance will be good during the Indonesian MotoGP. “The fact that the track has been paved again, will also help,” he explained.
The shroud changes, combined with 25% of the track resurfacing since the pre-season test, make the bike settings based on the test results that may not be effective when the riders conduct training sessions next Friday (18/3). (Crashnet/OL-15)
