Putu Piring, A Singaporean Snack Similar to Putu Cake

Singapore and Indonesia are close together, so it’s no wonder that the special foods from these two countries often have similarities. Like putut and putu cake.

Traditional snacks from Singapore and Indonesia have many similarities. Not just the looks but also the ingredients. Such as rice flour, glutinous rice flour, coconut and brown sugar.

There is a traditional snack called putu platter in Singapore which turns out to be similar to the typical Indonesian putu cake. The names of these two snacks are also very similar, the difference is in the way they are made and how they look.

Putu plate cake in Singapore, it is one of the Malay culinary heritages and is widely sold in the Chinatown area, which is inhabited by many Malays. It is said that many Malays marry Chinese in Singapore.

Putu cake dough is then molded into a cone-shaped mold. However, the appearance of a cooked putu is very much like a plate with floral accents.

The cooking process is evaporated over the pan until the texture turns solid. Putu platter is then served with a sprinkling of savory grated coconut. The price of putu platter offered by Haig Road outlets is around S$4 (Rp. 40 thousand).

The typical Indonesian putu cake is printed using bamboo with a hole in the middle. Then heated over a steaming pan. There are Indonesian putu cake dough that is plain white, or green from pandan leaf liquid or food coloring.

Putu cake sellers in Indonesia have a characteristic in the form of a shrill sound from the putu cooking process. In Indonesia, putu cake is usually offered from village to village. Many are also sold in the street food area.
