Visiting Komodo Dragons During the Mating Season, Turns Out This Is Their Behavior

Loh Liang

June, July and August are breeding seasons for the Komodo Dragon. How do these animals behave when entering the breeding season? Let’s see the following story.

The sun was shining so hot when detikTravel set foot on the island of Komodo. We visited the island where the Komodo Dragon lives before the tourism actors in Labuan Bajo went on strike for a month, starting this Monday (1/8).

Our arrival was greeted by Haryono Abdullah, the Naturalist Guide who will accompany the trip around the track to meet the Komodo Dragon. Before starting the trip, we got some explanations.

One of them is about the Komodo mating season. It turned out that when we visited, the Komodo dragon was entering the mating season. Pak Yono, as he is usually called, explained that if it was the mating season like this, Komodo dragons would be harder to see.

« The Komodo dragons are difficult to find during the mating season. They are more sensitive to human presence, » said Pak Yono on the island of Komodo, Thursday (28/7/2022) last week.

Pak Yono also explained, once entering the mating season, male Komodo dragons will become much more aggressive. Before mating, male Komodo dragons will fight each other for female Komodo dragons.

« They become aggressive. Before mating, they fight over the female first. Understandably, there are more males here. The ratio is 1 to 3, » explained Pak Yono.

With such a comparison, it was only natural that females were highly contested here. Male and female Komodo dragons themselves can be distinguished by size. Usually, male Komodo dragons are larger. The body is also more stocky than the female.

While walking along a short 2 kilometer track, we were surprised by a crowd of tourists from other groups. As it turned out, they were queuing up to see the Komodo dragons.

Apparently, luck was still on our side. During the breeding season, usually Komodo dragons are more difficult to find, but today we were lucky to meet one Komodo dragon.

The problem is, this Komodo dragon is resting on a hill, precisely under a grove of trees. We had to climb a bit up the hill to see it.

The pinnacle of being loved by ulam arrived. It was our group’s turn to see the dragon and take pictures with him. Travelers need to remember, taking pictures with Komodo must keep their distance. Just stand behind him at a safe distance, our guide will be happy to take pictures.

Never even touch it, let alone make sudden movements that can disturb the Komodo dragon. The result can be fatal. Luckily the almost 2 meter long Komodo dragon was calm and resting.

After taking pictures with the Komodo dragons, we returned to the dock. Unexpectedly, we met the second Komodo dragon. This time the Komodo dragon seemed to be busy walking on the beach.

What an amazing experience to be able to meet Komodo dragons during the mating season!
